About Sandhya

I’m a senior data and graphics reporter at The Los Angeles Times focusing on demographics and the government in California.  I’ve reported on COVID in CA, LA county, protests, homelessness, the Census, how neighborhoods in LA vote and other elections

I’m also currently an adjunct professor at the  University of Southern California, where I teach undergraduate students investigative and data journalism.

Prior to this, I was at ProPublica Illinois focused on analyzing statistics, databases and public records to uncover structural issues and abuses. I co-reported on the widespread inaccuracies in Cook County’s property tax assessment system, which was a Pulitzer Prize Finalist for Local Reporting in 2018.

Prior to that, I was a Knight-Mozilla fellow at Correctiv in Berlin, Germany. In Berlin, I worked on an investigation on the infrastructure of all 13,000 nursing homes throughout Germany. The project prompted discussion of how nursing homes should be evaluated and won the Deutscher Reporter Preis for Innovation.

I also published a guide to newsroom on-boarding and off-boarding processes. This e-book was the final product of my research during my fellowship.

I travel frequently to teach at workshops and conferences around the world.

I love statistics and learning new ways to tell data-driven stories. I have worked for digital, print, broadcast and radio outlets. I’ve spoken to national news media outlets in the U.S. & Germany, as well as local radio stations about my reporting.

In my spare time, I enjoy traveling, ice cream, doing crossword puzzles and trivia.
